Exercise has been warned that it can be deadly as teenagers battle a condition in which their ribcage grows inward.
Houghton-le-Spring native Jacob Brown was a lively teenager who dreamed of a career in the military, but his world was turned upside down last year when he was diagnosed with funnel chest, a condition. rice field. His 14-year-old boy, originally diagnosed with asthma, was out of breath and was running when he experienced excruciating chest pain.
Doctors found that Jacob’s ribcage had grown inward. This causes the sternum to sink into the chest, leaving only 3.5 inches between the sternum and the spine. This puts extreme pressure on his internal organs, especially his heart and lungs.

Medical personnel told Jacob not to exercise. The teenager was devastated by the news and had to completely change his lifestyle.
But having surgery to release the pressure on his organs gives Jacob another chance to do what he loves. In this procedure, a series of metal bars are placed on the ribs to push the sternum outward to improve chest depth.
However, this treatment is no longer available in the UK NHS and will cost £10,000. Jacob’s family launched a Go Fund Me campaign in hopes of raising important funds that would change his life.
Holly Ferguson, Jacob’s sister and an engineering student at East Durham College, said: We were in disbelief when we were first told by the NHS that his surgery would cost him £10,000. But we are determined to get the help Jacob needs. ”
The family, which also receives support from Houghton and Sunderland’s South MP Bridget Phillipson, is calling on the public to donate.
Mother Rachel Ferguson said: In my family of her husband and her six children, I have no choice but to ask others for help.
“Even if people could give a small amount, it would mean the world for our whole family.
