Makeup artist Pratima Bassi has always had a sweet tooth.
But a few years ago, when her love of gooey chocolate morsels and cream-filled cookies sent her weight skyrocketing to 265 pounds, the 23-year-old New Yorker from Rockland County decided she wanted to slim down. I made up my mind.
In 2018, she committed to a low-carb lifestyle and doing 90 minutes of strength training five times a week. She’s lost her 90 pounds and is on track, but there’s an element of wreak havoc with her health regimen. It’s candy.
This April, she learned that thousands of weightlifters within TikTok’s 122.4 billion strong #GymTok community are snacking on Sour Strips candy for pre-workout energy. .
So she tried eating a tangy swatch 20 minutes before her workout and immediately noticed a difference in her stamina and post-workout results. I was able to increase to 70 lbs. Dumbbells are used for lateral raises, walking her lunges and squats to tone her arms, legs and back.
“know [the strips] It will give you the energy you need to burn more calories and lift heavier weights,” Bassi told The Post.
Other TikTok users also praised this sweet and sour treat, which has racked up over 108 million views on the platform. After using sour strips for her first bodybuilding workout this spring, one gym-going snack lover suggested to her followers, “Make sour strips a pre-workout.” Her video testimony racked up her 1.6 million views, with comments like “I’m obsessed with her Sour Strips” and “This is the best.”
Social media personality, entrepreneur, and self-proclaimed “hardcore” sour candy lover Maxx Chewning launched Sour Strips in 2019. His website for Sour Strips advertises that there are 12 “extremely sour” flavors, and no less sugar.
But really, it’s sugar that’s fueling fitness freaks.
A 2013 study conducted by Spanish researchers found carbohydrates in the form of sugar to be key to athletes’ performance in the gym.
“A carbohydrate-rich diet is also recommended for endurance and ultra-endurance exercise, as it is associated with increased muscle glycogen (stored sugar in the body) stores and delayed onset of fatigue. Please read the survey results.
New Jersey Registered Dietitian Cassandra Lepore confirmed to The Post that candy, regardless of brand or flavor, is actually a good source of pre-workout energy.
“Candy is a simple source of carbohydrates, which means they break down quickly and are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, boosting energy levels,” explained Lepore.
Experts noted that healthier alternatives to sweets, such as bananas and applesauce, can also provide gym enthusiasts with a spark of fat-burning fire. It was mentioned as a good snack before.
“If you’re doing high-intensity training for more than an hour, you should have at least 30 to 60 grams of fast fuel and simple carbs before your workout,” continues Lepore.
For Bassi, candy is not only fuel, but also motivation.
“There are days when I don’t feel like exercising, but I know I can eat candy when I go to the gym, so I exercise anyway,” she laughs, adding that outside the gym it limits her. From sweets to keto-friendly shakes and bars. “The Sour Strips allow me to enjoy my workout while eating things I never thought I could eat while dieting.”
It’s all made for Bassi’s incredible success on her journey to health.
“When you’re overweight and on a weight loss journey, popping candy in your mouth is the last thing that makes you feel good about yourself,” she said. helps to achieve [body goals]”
