Round the Bays 2023, New Zealand’s biggest fun run, will take place on Sunday 5th March. thing Start an RTB fitness club. This is his 8-week training program designed to get you exercised and excited with a like-minded community, whether you’re tackling an event in person or virtually in Auckland. I’m here. Each week we bring you stories to inspire and educate you through your fitness journey.
January may seem like the perfect time to start incorporating movement into your life, but experts say it’s dangerous to start too soon if you want to make a difference.
Auckland-based personal trainer Nick Williams and Cameron Grigg, owner of Antics Health and Fitness, share five reasons to start a new year, a new you, before December 31st.
You will always wish you had started earlier.
Whenever he starts, Grigg says, “I always tell myself I wish I had started earlier. I wish I had started when I was younger,” so there’s no point in delaying it for a few more weeks.
Williams also points out that many people need to get to the point where they “must” change in order to actually want it. And what if you get to that point and make a decision?

“What are you waiting for?”
“Profit isn’t going to jump in your lap,” he said, adding that fitness doesn’t care what time of the year it is.
“Why based on an arbitrary date?”
There’s always another Monday (or another New Year).
Waiting until the new year is like committing to start “on Monday,” Grigg said.
“It’s so easy to say ‘I’ll start tomorrow,’ but you’ll be the same person tomorrow saying the same thing,” says Grigg.
“It’s just a pedestal on which you put January 1st.”
De-stress during the Christmas build-up
According to Griggs, it’s no secret that the Christmas pile can be stressful, and exercise is known to benefit mental health.
“I can channel [that stress through exercise] And you can own it,” he says.
By 2023, get through the toughest week in comfort
“The first week of training is always the hardest, and getting it out puts you in a better place for the new year,” says Griggs.
Williams agrees that exercise can help, but warns that it takes a certain amount of “mental capacity” to start a new fitness regime. If so, it’s worth deciding if now is the right time to add something new.
“We have a lot of mental load during this time. If you’re the kind of person who feels incredibly stressed, it might not be for you.” [right now]’ he says.
“You have to know you’re in the right mental load to work on something new.”
Setting the date is more likely to fail
If you have high hopes for any particular date on your calendar, you’re more likely to fail, says Williams.
Half the battle to start your fitness journey, he says, is realizing that now is the time to start. And if you’ve reached that decision, why wait?
“There is no point in setting yourself a specific time to start something. [that derails you]”
Williams tips to get you started
- If you have the budget, hire a professional
- Always remember the “why”. Write it down and keep coming back to it, whether it looks better or goes deeper.
- Be bold with your goals. For many, completing the Auckland fun run Round the Bays in March is a bold move, says Williams. But it is definitely achievable. So be bold. And once you’ve achieved that goal, set yourself another bold goal.
