Dr. Atsushi Tashiro and colleagues at New York University Langone Health in New York City evaluated the effects of parental history and age at the time of weight loss surgery on adolescents who underwent LSG (2010-2019). The analysis included a retrospective review of 328 patients aged 10 to 19 years who were undergoing LSG in a single facility.
Researchers found that 23.2 percent of patients had parents who had previously had weight loss surgery. At the time of surgery, these patients were significantly heavier, but there was no difference in postoperative weight loss. When compared by age at surgery, there was little difference in the results (under 16 years: 102, 16 years and older: 226).
“This study shows that weight loss surgery is as effective for younger adolescents as older children,” senior author Evan Nadler, MD, said in a statement. “Severely obese adolescents and teens face many significant barriers to access to metabolic obesity surgery, and while waiting, obesity-related comorbidity continues to develop and is healthy.
