It seems like a cup or bowl of your favorite yogurt can do it all, but not all types are created equal. These types of sugary yogurts are guaranteed to spike your blood sugar levels, but when it comes to destroying your blood sugar throughout the day, it’s been a problem since I was a kid. People who love colorful yogurts with candies may have a hard time adjusting, but choosing the right amount or type of yogurt can play an important role in staying healthy. When choosing the right variety, you can’t go wrong by looking at the ingredients first.
“I always recommend reading the nutrition facts table,” Mussat says. “In fact, don’t buy a yogurt brand without reading the label. The best yogurt to choose is one with 10 grams or less of total sugar and 15 grams or less of total carbohydrates per serving.”
If you can eat yogurt with very little sugar, there’s one type in particular that always blows the competition away when it comes to providing the best nutrition.
“Greek yogurt is what I always recommend to my patients,” Mussatto explains. “Choose a Greek yogurt that is at least 10 grams high in protein and low in carbohydrates per serving, ideally no more than 10 grams per serving. Protein helps control hunger and prevents blood sugar spikes.
If you don’t like Greek yogurt, it may seem like there aren’t many great options. Luckily, you can keep an eye out for healthier options and treat yourself to a variety of yogurts that are delicious without the sugar.
