I have lowered my total cholesterol by 100 points to a healthy level, but I am not losing weight. I wanted to lose weight, but I’m still in the same state. Is this normal?
I was recently diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and it may have something to do with it. Still, it’s frustrating to be doing well for my cholesterol and not see any change.

dear georgia
Congratulations on improving your health! My cholesterol level dropped 100 points! As a result, my chances of having a stroke or heart attack were greatly reduced. A 10% reduction in total blood cholesterol reduces the incidence of heart disease by as much as 30%.
I understand your frustration with the scale. Choosing healthier foods such as lean protein and increasing fruits and vegetables in your diet will often result in weight loss. You need to burn more calories than you take in. But you said it was most likely due to polycystic ovary syndrome.
For those unfamiliar with PCOS, it is a hormonal disorder that affects as many as five million women of childbearing age in the United States. Its name comes from the fluid-filled sacs, or cysts, that form in the ovaries. In PCOS, the ovaries produce abnormal amounts of androgens. Androgens are male hormones that are normally present in small amounts in women. Symptoms of PCOS include excess body hair, irregular periods, acne, and weight gain.
Many women with PCOS struggle to lose weight, but it’s unclear why. It is recommended to see an endocrinologist who specializes in hormonal disorders. He can test other conditions such as insulin resistance that can challenge weight loss.
don’t give up hope. Losing weight with PCOS may take time, but it is possible. Your endocrinologist will refer you to a registered dietitian nutritionist who can work closely with you to help you reach your weight loss goals. We can make a referral. Most insurance will cover the cost of a consultation with a registered dietitian.
Stay healthy until next time!
