COLUMBUS, Ga., Oct. 5, 2022 /CSRwire/ — Most Americans, especially those with higher incomes and higher education, are more concerned with their mental health than with the economy, the political climate, or challenges related to COVID-19. A staggering percentage of employees are ready to quit their jobs and start their own businesses, and with budget cuts due to the economy, financial support for charities, friends and family accounts for only half of household spending. These are some of the results of her recently released 2022 Aflac Risk Study of 1,644 American adults. A leading provider of supplemental health insurance in the United States, her $22 billion supplemental insurance company surveys Americans on important topics each year.
Other findings from this year’s survey include:
- About 90% of Americans cite proactively managing mental health risks as a priority, while 80% are concerned about the state of the U.S. economy and 61% say politics is affecting their families. 54% are concerned about the impact of COVID-19.
- Nearly 57% of Americans with incomes greater than $150,000 reported that “proactively managing risks to your and your family’s mental health” has increased in importance over the past few years. equity gap.
- Nearly one in six Americans is somewhat or very likely to quit their job and start a business, including more than half of the self-reported “absolute risk takers” included. People whose chances of starting their own business have changed in the last few years are more likely to start their own business than 4 out of 10. It doesn’t mean that you want to.
- Nine in 10 people who make changes to their finances have cut back on their spending, but less than half have cut back on their friends, family and charities they care about most.
Aflac Senior Vice President said: Bob Ruff of Group Voluntary Benefits. “How people manage these risks has a lot to do with their income and education, indicating a potential mental health care gap that must be addressed.”
In 2022, Aflac added a mental health component to several products in response to the growing need for access to emotional and mental stress reduction tools. According to the National Alliance on Mental Health, 21% of U.S. adults, or about 53 million people, experienced mental illness in 2020, and 46% of adults with mental illness were treated. Severe mental illness costs $193.2 billion in lost income each year.1
Jeramie Tipton, Senior Vice President, Sales Growth and Consumer Markets, Aflac, said: “People seem to want to work, but not everyone necessarily wants to work for someone else. It will have a significant impact on how people obtain health care benefits through consumer-led platforms. It is important to note, however, that risk-taking is not the same as recklessness. We know we can’t avoid it, so we take great care to manage the risks.
Aflac currently offers many consumer products, including cancer, critical illness, accident, end-of-life, whole life insurance and Medicare supplements. The company plans to add consumer products to its list of available policies in 2022 and 2023.
The 2022 Aflac Risk Survey was conducted online July 8-9, 2022 among 1,644 American adults ages 18 and older. Completed interviews were weighted by age, gender, and geographic region to ensure reliability and accuracy of the US adult population.
