LOUISVILLE – An overwhelming majority of Kentuckians support the national government’s health plan, according to a new survey conducted by Kentucky-based health care advocacy group.
The Asklepios Initiative produced a survey of 1,000 adults in Kentucky. The survey found that two-thirds (67%) support government health insurance schemes that provide health insurance for all. Furthermore, three-quarters (75%) of those surveyed feel that health care is a basic human right.
“The results of this survey clearly demonstrate the desire for systemic change in the current healthcare system.
Additional findings:
- Four out of 10 Kentuckians would change their lives if they didn’t have to worry about health insurance coverage.

- 53% skipped or stopped follow-up care.
- 43% skipped or discontinued medication.

- More than half of those surveyed worry about medical bills for themselves or their family members at least once a month, and nearly one in five worry about medical bills every day.
Kevin Pearce, M.D., family physician and director of the Asclepius Initiative, said: “This research shows that both urban and rural populations have problems that prevent them from accessing basic and continuing health care. I am,” he added. “By providing early and appropriate care, we can save people from huge medical costs and reduce the risk of suffering and disability from serious illness.”
Conducted by Qualtrics in April-May 2022, this online survey assessed Kentuckians’ attitudes and beliefs about the U.S. healthcare delivery system and their willingness to consider alternative funding models. Respondents matched Kentucky demographics for gender, race/ethnicity, insurance status (uninsured, employer-insured, Medicaid, Medicare, nongroup), and urban vs. rural.
