That was the inspiration for her small business, “Made With Love Juicery,” which first opened in May 2021 in the city’s Spring Garden district.
Brown was a student in both pharmacy and cooking. She was first introduced to the world of juice when she was working at Whole Foods.
“I gained 100 pounds during my pregnancy,” she said. “And I found juice as a way to boost immunity as well as lose weight.”
When Whole Foods’ juice bar closed, she started building her own brand to sell out her car. Her desire to share her healthy recipes with the entire community led to the opening of her own storefront.
However, there were some challenges she had to overcome first.
“Five days before opening, the window was broken,” she said. “Our fridge also exploded, and our neighbors were able to tip and donate to get a brand new fridge.”
Brown says the community and her employees have been pushing her despite the ups and downs. But after all, the biggest reason she works hard is to feed her children.
“I’m a wife and a mother of three violent children,” she said. “Everything I do is for them. Without children, I wouldn’t think I am today.”
Brown hopes that her work ethics will set an example for her children and the community. She has worked seemingly endless hours and she is now receiving the same salary as her employees.
“Now I can afford it, and I feel like my team is doing exactly the same thing as I am, so I don’t want to rob them of anything more,” she said.
As a result, her employees seem to appreciate her.
“Especially it’s very exciting that she’s a mother of three,” said employee Shawna Walker.
Since Walker himself is a mother, he wants to emulate the trajectory of Brown’s career.
“One day I want to own my business,” she said. “So I’ve been trying to understand how she does this and that, and I’m just happy that she remained strong throughout.”
In the future, Brown wants her juice to hit the shelves of a store like Shoplight in the neighborhood of Philadelphia. That way, people don’t have to venture far from home to find healthy options.
She is also proud to maintain commerce within the community and has partnered with many local vendors to obtain ingredients.
