NYC Health + Hospitals today announced Mitchell Katz, M.D., President and CEO, José A. Pagán, M.D., Chairman of the Board, and Talya Schwartz, M.D., President and CEO of MetroPlusHealth, and an infectious disease expert. . Dr. Katz has also worked closely with Mayor Eric Adams’ team treating homeless patients, and Pagan was elected to the National Academy of Medicine last fall.

Dr. Katz was appointed President and CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals in January 2018. During this time, Dr. Katz has focused on advancing the transformation of the public health system with a number of new initiatives to expand access to primary care services and reduce administration. He will invest in more frontline clinical staff and build financial stability. In September 2020, NYC Care, a healthcare access program for New Yorkers who can’t afford or can’t afford health insurance, will begin citywide under the direction of Dr. Katz, four months ahead of schedule. it was done.
Dr. Katz’s first transformative strategy helped lay the groundwork for public healthcare systems to meet the challenges of COVID-19, an unprecedented global health crisis. During the pandemic, the system increased his ICU capacity to more than triple his capacity, set up a dedicated COVID-19 hotline to alleviate the dangerous overcrowding of the system’s emergency department, and nearly all existing outpatient appointments to telemedicine and the city’s test-and-trace squad. The public health system is now also providing critical support to expedite the city’s deployment of his COVID-19 vaccine and boosters to eligible individuals.
Pagán is Professor and Chair of the Department of Public Health Policy and Management in the School of Global Public Health at New York University. He is also an Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute for Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania and Chair of the National Advisory Board of Health Policy Research Scholars of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Mr. Pagán is a health economist who has led research, implementation and evaluation projects on redesigning health care delivery and payment systems. He is interested in population health care, reforming healthcare payment and delivery systems, and the social determinants of health. He is currently a member of the Systems Approach Committee for Improving Patient Care by Supporting Clinician Health at the National Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. He has also been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Interdisciplinary Society for Population Health Sciences and the American Health Economics Association.
An experienced health plan management and operations leader, Dr. Schwartz was appointed President and CEO of MetroPlusHealth in 2019. During her tenure, MetroPlusHealth achieved her 35% growth in membership and earned her a five-star rating from the New York State Consumer Guide. – A star rating from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and an increase in overall net worth. Her trained physician, Dr. Schwartz, earned her medical degree from Sackler College of Medicine, completed her pediatric residency at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, and has practiced at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. . Dr. Gounder is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine. She cares for patients in her NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue ward. From November 9, 2020 until January 20, 2021, Dr. Gounder served as a member of the Biden-Harris Transition COVID-19 Advisory Board. Dr. Gounder is a Senior Fellow and Editor-in-Chief of Public Health at the Kaiser Family Foundation and Kaiser Health News. She holds a BS in molecular biology from Princeton University, an MS in epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and a medical degree from the University of Washington.
