This story is part of a series of stories and educational resources featuring East LA and its surrounding areas and communities.
Dr. Ilan Shapiro, Health Education and Wellness Medical Director at Alta Med Health Services in Boyle Heights, says it’s normal for children to like and dislike. Shapiro says one of the best ways to get children interested in a healthy diet is to get them involved in grocery shopping and diet planning.
When buying ingredients with your child, use this as an opportunity to introduce new ingredient names in English and Spanish. Loudly say you’re looking for “unrepollo, or one cabbage,” or ask for help in finding “aguacate, or avocado.”
Farmers markets and specialty stores are not essential for families to have a healthier diet. Fresh fruits and vegetables can be found at any grocery store in East LA or anywhere. If you can’t find what you need in the fresh food section, frozen fruits and vegetables are a good alternative.
Inspired by all the great restaurants and street vendors in the community, this simple recipe is one of a balanced diet where traditional foods (such as tacos) consist primarily of all and non-all foods. The purpose is to show that it can be a department. It is very processed.

1. In a medium bowl, mix balsamic vinegar, chipotle pepper and garlic salt. Add cabbage, onions and warm chicken and mix well.
Moment of learning: Encourage your child to explore new ingredients with their five senses to deepen their knowledge of nutrition. Set a few samples aside so you can taste, touch, see, smell, and hear the sounds of each ingredient. Ask them to explain it: “How does it feel?” To integrate the math, ask the child to help measure the amount of each material added to the bowl. give me. Encourage them to add a little more or less of the ingredients they like or dislike. Ask your child to be aware of what happens to the ingredients when mixing the ingredients. Will some of them be obscured? Why or why not?
2. To warm the tortillas, heat both sides in a hot frying pan for 1 minute. Alternatively, place the tortillas on a large plate, place a damp paper towel on top, and heat in the microwave for 2 minutes, or in the microwave until the tortillas are warm.
Moment of learning: Discuss the shape of the tortillas with your child to incorporate a little math learning. If your child is just getting used to the shape and characteristics, ask them to trace the edges of the tortillas and other materials. You can ask, “Is it the same shape as the plate?” “What is the name of this shape?” And “Can you find other materials that are similar in shape? Can this be done? Yes!”
3. Spoon warm tortillas and top with cheese, avocado, coriander and lime.
