Jana Kramer is getting personal with a new post detailing her experiences with domestic violence.
The 38-year-old country singer kicked off Domestic Violence Awareness Month by taking to Instagram on Saturday, October 1, to share her own history of abuse.
In the photo, a much younger Kramer smiles for the camera next to his mother, but there’s a much darker story behind the seemingly joyful scene.
“This is a very difficult picture for me to see.” One Tree Hill The alum wrote in the caption. I’m having a hard time.”
She continued, “I don’t remember the excuses I gave people when I flew home to escape abuse about cuts and scrapes on my shoulders and arms and why my ribs hurt,” she continued. “But when you look at this picture, you can only see that.”
The ‘Voice’ singer went on to recount her experience with an ex that ‘pinned her to the ground’ and ‘started strangling her’ [her] he said he was going to kill [her].”

“I was so embarrassed. It made me feel like I had no one and no one believed me. is wrong and deserves it.” She recalled telling her followers that she held those beliefs “for years.”
“…I will talk more about the abuse that followed and the pattern that followed in the near future, but to be honest, it’s been a long road and a road I’m still trying to take knowing it wasn’t the last abuse. ‘Relationships…’ she continued.
Kramer’s post on Saturday also included a video clip of a speech she once gave for Safe Horizon, a nonprofit organization for victims of abuse and violence. In the video, the actress held back her tears and spoke about her years of abuse.
At the end of his Instagram post, Kramer encouraged his followers to use available resources like Safe Horizon if necessary. “Speak to someone,” she encouraged.
