Fitness and well-being experts have revealed one change we need to make to uphold our New Year’s aspirations.
Pat Divilly, with a Masters in Exercise and Nutrition, has helped clients improve their physical and mental health for years.
He clarified why some people are struggling to make the resolution permanent and how we reach our fitness goals.
“What was interesting to me was how we talk to ourselves and how it affects how we appear in the world. How our self-speaking affects us. Do you? “He said.
“The stories we tell influence how we feel for ourselves, and our emotions influence the actions we take.
“If I’m always telling myself that I’m the one who falls off the wagon, if it’s my story entering 2022, it will bring hopelessness-and when you feel despair-you have a chance. There is something that interferes with backing up how you feel about yourself.
“This is a piece of the puzzle we’re missing. Do we recognize the stories we’re telling? Is there a toolkit to challenge these stories?
“You sometimes have to say I’m worried, but that’s okay, and I need to know that part of myself and accept that part of myself.”
Pat also explained that if you are interested in your actions, you are more likely to succeed.
He told RTE’s Sunday with Miriam program that some clients couldn’t see the progress of their weight loss when they saw the numbers they didn’t like on their scales.
He states: “If you’re curious about why you’re disturbing yourself and why you’re falling off the wagon and continuing to make the same cycle, that curiosity gives me the opportunity to explore and not feel the pressure to give in. [and fail]..
“We all look at ourselves in a particular way, enter the world and try to get it back.
“Clients may be doing really well. They will feel confident and heading towards everything they want. Then they step on the scale and see the number they want. I couldn’t.
“At that moment, they will lose sight of the fact that their energy and self-confidence have improved, their mental health has improved, and they have met new friends through the gym.
“All this positive thing in their lives is overshadowed by the fact that the numbers on the scale do not show what they think it should show.
“The stress of our lives is often about how we feel” should “and” should. “
