Have a healthy holiday!
This most wonderful time of the year is known for its pleasant weather, family gatherings, and delicious meals and treats. I won’t repeat the tip from November’s Thanksgiving column, but I want to repeat a few things. Holiday foods are often high in calories, saturated fat, sodium and added sugar. Therefore, it is important to be careful about the foods and portions we choose. Holiday foods play an important role in bringing people together and connecting us with cultures and traditions, but moderation is key. Don’t forget one thing.
Cooler outdoor temperatures can also encourage us to become more sedentary. Physical activity is just as important as conscious food choices. According to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, an adult should incorporate at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity and two days of strength-building into her weekly routine. Physical activity is anything that moves your body. Indoor or outdoor activities, such as gardening, dancing, or following exercise videos. With so many options, choose your favorite activity and get your body moving.
Incorporating a few small changes can make a big difference during the holiday season. Here are some quick tips to make your vacation a little healthier.
- add to plateInstead of worrying about what to leave off your plate this holiday season, add to it! Add colorful vegetables and fruits, whole grains, lean protein and low-fat dairy options for balance Make sure you eat well. Don’t hesitate to enjoy and savor your holiday favorites.
- Avoid distracted eating– The holiday season is a great time for endless snacking, often allowing you to dine without distractions like television or engaging conversation. Where to eat at the table during this time and serve the dish yourself.
- Include holiday physical activity– Start a fun family tradition of incorporating physical activity this holiday season. Whether it’s a family walk or a holiday 5km run, you get your body moving by creating memories and traditions with your family.

At the end
Whenever I decide to do something kind, I usually make the right decision.
