Fargo, North Dakota (Valley News Live)-Parents are nervous due to recent recalls and subsequent shortages of infant formula throughout the United States.
“I think I’m mostly nervous because it’s impossible to find,” said Moorhead’s mother, Melissa Osland.
Alternative recipes are appearing on social media, and health officials say they pose a risk to the safety and well-being of children.
“These recipes that circulate really make me nervous,” said Stephanie Hanson, a pediatrician at Sanford Health. “Eating improperly can cause problems such as brain damage, seizures, and kidney damage. It’s really dangerous to use these types of homemade recipes.”
Some of these recipes are from the 1960s, including boiling water. Other alternatives use goat milk and corn syrup. Hanson said that babies have specific needs and his parents should avoid them. Hanson also recommends diluting infant formula to make it last longer.
“It can cause nutrient imbalances and can cause brain damage and seizures,” Hanson said.
As for powdered milk, the shelves are barren, which puts a lot of pressure on parents all over the country. Osland may rely on the help of others on social media in serving food to her son.
“It’s feeding him enough food for another two days, so I’ll take what I can get and hopefully help other moms with the rest,” Osland said.
Hanson of Sanford Health also advises people not to store infant formula as the country continues to face shortages.
