(KNSI) — The lack of infant formula forces parents to be creative and even share homemade recipes online. It’s a health expert appealing to desperate parents, and pediatrician Dr. Valerie Smith says it can be dangerous, especially for young children.
“The formula is built as closely as possible to mimic breast milk, especially around the electrolyte balance. Babies can struggle if they don’t receive the right amount of electrolyte.
She says she calls your pediatrician instead of going to the pantry. Your doctor can help you get the prescription as a medicine. The health department may also be able to help.
Retailers such as CVS, Target, Walmart, and Walgreens limit the amount of infant formula purchased at one time to prevent the storage of infant formula.
The shortage of infant formula began with the recall of Abbott Nutrition in February following reports that contaminated products made infants sick and exacerbated by supply chain problems. Producers have stepped up their efforts, but there is no firm schedule for when the shortage is expected to be mitigated.
