Democrats Push Climate, Health and Tax Bills to the Last Line
Late Friday the House passed sweeping legislation from Democrats that would advance the climate change, tax and health care agendas, sending the bill to Biden’s desk, less than three months after the midterm elections and the president and his party. brought a big victory to
All 220 Democrats voted in favor of the $740 billion bill. The bill includes provisions to increase taxes on businesses, tackle climate change, lower prescription drug prices, and reduce deficits.
Further things to do: The law would make historic changes to the health care system, but Democrats admitted they wanted more.
- That’s a great bill. It’s historic,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Democrat, California) told reporters at the Capitol this week. “Of course we want more. We always want more. But this is a big deal.”

Polio found in New York City sewage suggests virus is circulating
The discovery of the virus that causes polio in New York City wastewater is another indication that the disease, which has not been seen in the United States for a decade, is quietly spreading among unvaccinated populations. It’s a symptom, health officials said on Friday.
The presence of poliovirus in city wastewater suggests that the virus is likely circulating locally, city, New York state and federal health officials said.
Authorities have urged parents to vaccinate their children against the deadly disease.
- “The risk to New Yorkers is real, but the defense is very simple: Get vaccinated against polio,” said Dr. Ashwin Vasan of the New York City Board of Health.
- “With polio prevalent in our communities, nothing is more important than immunizing children to protect them from this virus. If you are, choose to get vaccinated now.Polio is completely preventable and its resurgence should take action for all of us.”
In New York, one person was paralyzed a few weeks ago in Rockland County, north of the city, due to a polio infection. Wastewater samples collected in June in both Rockland and neighboring Orange County were found to contain the virus.
CDC officials said the virus identified in wastewater samples collected in New York City did not contain enough genetic material to determine whether it was associated with the Rockland County patient. .

Democratic Eye Medicaid Expansion, Insulin Caps
House Democratic leaders said they hope to close the gap from the Inflation Cut Act by expanding Medicaid and focusing on insulin pricing if they can maintain a majority next year.
House Majority Leader Stenny Hoyer, Democrat-Maryland, told reporters that if Democrats kept the House and the Senate provided health care to the 12 states that didn’t expand Medicaid, it would be the most they would want. talked about priorities.
“There is no doubt that we will pursue our goals. [Majority Whip] Clyburn and I talked about our priorities. Best to check the 12 states that have refused to include people under Medicaid,” Hoyer said.
Hoyer said he wants to extend the $35 cap on insulin costs to the private sector. The law only applies caps to Medicare patients. The original Senate bill included that provision, but it was removed after Republicans voted against the senator’s dismissal.
Florida resumes two-dose regimen of monkeypox vaccine
The Florida Department of Health has allowed two doses of the ginneos monkeypox vaccine to be re-administered to residents.
State health officials began restricting the state’s monkeypox vaccine supply after the number of cases doubled over the past week.
But just days after the Food and Drug Administration approved an alternative method of administering the vaccine, Florida health officials told Changing America to resume a second dose of the vaccine and to allow previously canceled vaccination appointments by residents. He said he would reschedule.
- “Preventing the spread of monkeypox is a priority for the Department of Health,” said Department of Health spokesperson Jeremy Redfern.
- “We will continue to make adjustments as more supplies become available from the federal government.”
Following the rising number of monkeypox cases, the state of Florida announced earlier this week that it would offer a single dose of a two-dose regimen to limit vaccine supplies.
But on Tuesday, the Biden administration approved a new federal monkeypox vaccine distribution plan that could vaccinate up to five times more people.

Transgender Medicaid recipients in Florida will no longer be able to use Medicaid to cover gender-affirming health care under new state rules that go into effect later this month.

Furious supporters: Lambda Legal, Southern Legal Counsel, the Florida Health Justice Project, and the National Health Law Program called the move “medically and scientifically unsound,” in a joint statement Thursday, calling it politically unsound. He said it was the motive.
- “This rule represents a dangerous escalation of Governor DeSantis’ political zeal to persecute Florida’s LGBTQ+ people, especially transgender youth,” lamented the group.
Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican, earlier this month suspended Andrew Warren, the elected state attorney in Tampa. said.
