A woman fed up with people praising weight loss is being cheered online after a post bemoaning the treatment of “fat” people went viral.
Posting on Reddit on Tuesday, user u/euisalk said he was not only disgusted with how people were kind to him after losing weight, but angry at how he was treated before he lost weight. rice field.
Unfortunately, her newfound confidence led to an “awkward” confrontation with a fat-hating relative at a family party.
In less than a day, the woman’s post received over 11,000 likes and over 1,200 comments, with users applauding her for standing up.
Fatphobia is on the rise
Studies have shown that fat phobia affects overweight people in different ways. A 2017 study found that overweight candidates are less likely to be hired, and health professionals’ weight bias can negatively impact the health of patients, especially those in the Black and Latino communities. I understand.
A 2021 study by Harvard University found that discrimination based on weight is on the rise, contributing to the rise of fat-shaming on social media.
Experiencing weight stigma can lead to problems such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and negative body image.
But rather than spur weight loss, weight shaming can lead to eating disorders and avoidance of exercise, which can worsen physical health.
“unacceptable”
In the post, Euisalk wrote that she was “fat since childhood” and detailed how she has struggled with weight stigma throughout her life.
“Growing up fat was hard,” she wrote. No doubt.
“Don’t complain if it’s too hot in the summer. Your food choices are scrutinized to death. Eat a salad, well done!!!! It’s very healthy!!!! Trying to lose weight.” Good for you who are!!! Eating a hamburger?
“It was hard.”
However, the Redditor recently lost weight after developing a healthy exercise routine and switching to a vegan diet, and noticed a huge difference in how people treat her.
“I went from size 18/20 to 10/12,” she wrote. “I am vague about weight loss and angry about its treatment.”
Even though her personality hasn’t changed since she lost weight, people have become “gentle” to her, the poster says.
“Like them greeting me in a place they haven’t been before,” the Redditor wrote.
“My Instagram likes are at an all-time high. Men attack me and point out other aspects of my personality besides being funny.”
The woman wrote that she was “upset” that people were “treating her with basic human decency.” At her family event, several people petted her, asked for her weight loss tips, and upset her poster.
The poster wrote, “I asked people to stop commenting on their bodies because they felt uncomfortable with them. ‘Until I snapped they stuck.'”
The poster, “curtly but adamantly,” said he was disgusted with the way his family treated him. I have a cousin who asked.
“If I hadn’t been fat, I would have had the love and support of my family for years, which makes me sad,” she wrote.
After the blast, the family quickly left and everyone was quiet. On her way home, the poster’s mom and dad beat her in her car for making her situation “awkward.”
“They said I shouldn’t have ruined the family reunion and just thanked,” she wrote.
Redditors praised the poster for confronting a fatphobic family, and _daikon told her to be “proud” of herself.
“What you have described in this post is that you have decided to love yourself,” one user wrote.
“People have unjustified prejudices and need to learn that they are not acceptable,” writes Commercial-Pear-543.
