(WDVM) — A bill aimed at protecting patients came into force earlier this year, but health policy experts are concerned that some healthcare providers will not comply with their obligations.
Unsurprising laws prohibit what is known as pervasive medical expenses, or medical expenses that you did not know you would receive when you received medical care.
For example, if you need an ambulance after an accident and are taken to an uninsured hospital, your bill will be higher. The bill also applies to situations where a healthcare provider, such as an anesthesiologist, outside the insurance network sees the patient.
The bill also requires healthcare providers, hospitals or other facilities, and ambulance services to provide uninsured people with a sincere estimate of the expected cost of health care services. According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, different providers may have to participate in the patient and provider’s payment dispute resolution process if the charges charged are higher than the honest quote.
Health policy expert Katie Keith told WDVM25 that the law came into force in January 2022, but more importantly, medical costs when ascertaining which doctor or doctor is insured. The patient said that care should be taken when confirming. She also says she is worried that many providers may not yet be implementing this new law.
“It’s like taking care of a patient already. Oh, you shouldn’t receive these invoices by mail. But everyone is observing and paying attention. Not that it’s a bit new, so we’re still a little worried that things may still be unfolding, so I think the second piece of advice is to actually check the invoice. No matter what medical expenses you receive, please take a closer look and read. “
Keith says he needs to call the insurance company if he finds out he has a “surprise invoice”. If your insurance company can’t help, Keith tells you to call your state’s insurance department.
