The Edinburgh charity is hosting two community workshop events this month aimed at helping parents feed their children healthier meals. Edinburgh Community Food’s Healthy Little Foodies project visits venues across the city to discuss all aspects of baby food, fussy eating and baby and toddler nutrition with families.
The project will provide parent advice on November 17th at 3:00pm at the Greenhouse Pantry on Niddrie Mains Road and on November 29th at 10:00am at the Wester Hailes Healthy Living Center on Harvesters Way. Nutritionist Jessica Pearson is food and health development director for Edinburgh Community Food’s Healthy Little Foodies project.
she said: Many parents with children under the age of five or in elementary school struggle with healthy eating and nutrition for their children. They say they really don’t know how to feed their children’s mouths with healthy food.
“That is why we provide practical tips on how to provide children with healthier meals, as well as healthy, nutritious recipes to prepare at home. We also offer a lot of general baby and toddler nutrition advice such as how to manage sugar intake, which seems to be a problem for parents. Since it later reopened, we’ve been going at least every week or two for the first few months at different locations around the city. We’re trying to reach as many people as possible.”
Funded by a number of agencies, including the Scottish Government, NHS Lothian and Edinburgh Council, the Edinburgh Food Project aims to enable people to enjoy delicious, fresh and healthy meals, and affordable prices for everyone in the city. The aim is to make healthy diets available. This charity has run the Healthy Little Foodies project for his three years.
“It started just before coronavirus, and when we took it online, we got a very positive response,” says Jessica. Make snacks, give advice, and provide healthy recipes.
“The workshops are very popular. In some areas 10-15 families attend the sessions, but in some locations there are only 1-2 people. Groups interested in attending please contact us. We can set up a workshop.”
Edinburgh Community Food sources and sells the highest quality fruits and vegetables, selling produce to staff, patients and visitors at Edinburgh hospital stalls. The charity also delivers fresh fruits and vegetables to homes and businesses across the city.
