Mary Berry started croquet after doctors told her she could die within four years if she didn’t exercise.
The 87-year-old TV cook opens up about the warning in an interview with TODAY’s Daily Mail’s Weekend Magazine.
She broke her hip in a fall while gardening last year and underwent surgery at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, where she was hospitalized for several days.

Dame Mary says: Sitting in a chair and not exercising, she will probably die within 4 years, walking (even uphill!), doing everything she can, and never fully recovering. It would take her 18 months.” And well, she was right. I exercise and have done a lot of physio, still not normal, but it will be.
After taking up croquet, she’s thrilled to finally have a sport she can do with her husband, Paul Hannings, 90. I’ve never played sports with her husband before because he says she has no ball feel,” she said.
“But I am taking lessons with a lovely Finnish woman. She is very patient with us and I love it!
Dame now plays croquet with her husband, Paul Hannings, 90, and enjoys the sport together.
“My husband used to play rugby, tennis and squash for the Saracens, but now he’s 90 and can’t. But croquet is perfect for people our age. Me We played for two hours, and he said he was exhausted at the end, but after a bit of excitement, he picked himself up again.
Mary was picking sweet peas when she tripped in August 2021. Her hip was broken and she had to wait three and a half hours for her ambulance to arrive.
A few months ago she tested positive for Covid with her husband while on vacation in Corfu and is grateful that they were able to isolate together.
