Possible adjustment package updates
- Recently, Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) said he would accept a “more skinny” settlement bill that focused on:
- Inflation and deficit reduction, including certain tax reforms. Senator Manchin especially wants to raise corporate taxes.
- Price reform of prescription drugs.
- Climate and energy consumption.
- In recent weeks, Senator Manchin and majority leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) have met many times to discuss the possibility of a reconciliation bill. These meetings were frequent in late June, with four meetings a week on June 20th.
- Senate Democrats may submit legislative texts on drug price reforms to Senators that can be included in the settlement bill. (Members are responsible for determining whether the language complies with the Senate’s budget adjustment rules.)
- If an agreement is reached, the team of leader shooters is targeting early July or early August for potential voting on such packages.
- All transactions that the Senate Democratic Party may make with Senator Manchin must be approved by Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ). We believe there is still a significant gap between what Senator Manchin and Senator Cinema want in the deal, including various tax policies.
