Indianapolis (Wish) — There are so many great foods to eat during the holiday season, but finding delicious, healthy recipes can be difficult for those on a heart-healthy diet.
Adriane Geesaman, registered dietitian at the Ascension St. Vincent Heart Center, stopped by Daybreak on Tuesday to share some delicious, heart-healthy recipes.
These recipes are part of a cookbook of 20 recipes put together by Geesaman and other members of the Cardiac Center’s dietary team to mark the facility’s 20th anniversary.
One of Geesaman’s go-to recipes from the cookbook is for the Mexican Quinoa Cookbook.
“It’s a great vegan dish. Beans, quinoa, corn, it’s all packed with fiber and nutrients. It’s also really delicious,” Giesaman said. “You can serve it with avocado, or you can add a lime to garnish.”
For those with a sweet tooth and health conscious, Geethaman recommends whole wheat banana bread.
“Very good and easy to put together when you’re on vacation and don’t have time. Made with whole grains and also added walnuts for heart-healthy fats and fiber. It’s made with olive oil. – Liquid at room temperature, these oils are low in saturated fat and a little heart-healthy,” Gisaman explained.
Giesaman says most of the cookbook recipes use ingredients that people already have in their kitchens, and there are plenty of opportunities to substitute canned or frozen versions for fresh produce.
“I don’t like it when nutritionists label foods as bad, but portion control is key. Making substitutions can make your heart a little healthier, especially if you’re following these restrictions while on vacation.
