Olden Johnson is a candidate for the Liberal Party in Mississippi’s Fourth Parliamentary District and is currently occupied by Republican Rep. Stephen Palazzo. He will participate in the voting for the midterm elections on November 8, 2022. The Mississippi Free Press has sent the following questionnaire to all Mississippi Parliamentary candidates: I received the answer with only a simple edit, so I am presenting the answer.
What are your policy proposals for education?
We suggest that you remove the standardized test. I think it causes excessive stress on both educators and students.
What are your thoughts on guns, gun violence and mass shootings? If so, what specific gun control do you support?
The shootings are heartbreaking. My heart is directed at all those who are sad and now sad. In my opinion about firearms in general, there are facts that cannot be ignored. Prohibition does not work. I support ownership of firearms and oppose further regulations. Also, I don’t think rights are privileges. I believe that serious offenders should have the right to protect themselves and their families through ownership of firearms after completing their sentence. If individuals are safe enough to be released, they should restore their rights. This includes voting rights.
What are your thoughts on your criminal justice policy and police violence and atrocities?
I suggest ending the no-knock warrant attack, ending the limited immunity, ending the confiscation of civilian property, and holding the police accountable for any infringement. Police atrocities seem to be a daily occurrence. We are currently punishing taxpayers with taxes to cover court proceedings and settlements against police atrocities. Many healthcare professionals have their own liability insurance. Why can’t the police?
What do you do, including mental health, to improve the quality and access to health care in Mississippi?
I am an advocate of the “Direct Primary Care” healthcare model. Insurance companies have inadvertently raised medical costs beyond reason. Removing the stigma of seeking mental health care is paramount.
What is your position on access to abortion and, if any, what federal law do you support in connection with abortion?
Explain the penalties you would support for those who have had an abortion. I do not support the government trying to legislate morality. Whether it’s cannabis or abortion, I support all laws to protect access to abortion. I oppose any penalties for those seeking and performing abortions. It’s neither my business nor the government’s business.
List all forms of contraceptives that you think should be banned, such as oral contraceptives, Plan B / emergency contraceptives, and IUDs.
I oppose any attempt to ban all forms of contraception, including emergency contraception, IUDs, etc.
What are your thoughts on improving our voting and election system?
I fully support alternative voting methods. My favorite method is to vote for ranked choices. This system allows voters to vote for their favorite candidates, eliminating the fear of “wasting a vote.”
What are your thoughts on systematic racism and taking into account its implications when formulating policies?
There is no doubt that racism still exists. Past policies, such as much more stringent penalties for possessing “crack cocaine” than possession of powdered cocaine, have undoubtedly been implemented to target specific demographics. When proposing a legislation, or before supporting the legislation, I ask myself. “What potential consequences does this law have?”
What suggestions do you support for the environment and climate change?
I am a defender of nuclear power. Our fleet of US Navy submarines and ships has been producing nuclear power for decades. Nuclear power and propulsion have come a long way in terms of efficiency and safety.
What is your policy view on the immigration system in our country?
It’s broken to say the least. Anyone who works hard and leaves everything behind to feed a family in a foreign land is not my enemy. I propose a streamlined immigration system like the one used on Ellis Island.
What are your views and policy ideas related to LGBTQ rights?
I support the LGBTQ community and consider myself an ally. I disagree with the fact that federal taxes are currently being used to support “private adoption agencies” that continue to discriminate against same-sex couples who are considering adoption. I will propose a bill to exclude taxpayer funds from “private organizations” including “private universities” that are allowed to discriminate.
What are your views and policies regarding the rights of persons with disabilities?
People with disabilities are still individuals. I don’t have a monetary policy plan on this subject, but I will listen to any suggestions and be open,
If so, do you support the enactment of federal marijuana law?
The war on drugs has failed. I’m a cannabis advocate and promised to remove cannabis from the list of controlled substances and propose a law to release nonviolent cannabis offenders from prison. I will be the first person to smoke a collaboration with my members to celebrate.
What are your economic policy ideas?
Free the market. End corporate welfare and end taxpayer-funded bailouts. The government should not decide which business will fail and which will succeed. I also oppose tariffs, which are nothing more than hidden taxes on consumers.
What is your vision for meeting your infrastructure needs?
Full transparency regarding federal infrastructure contracts will ensure that companies are responsible for their crude work and will reward better companies. The fact that Domino’s Pizza did a better job on paved roads than our government tells me it’s time to try something else.
What other policy proposals do you have, and are there any that we didn’t ask?
Submit a law to introduce a time limit at the federal level. Within 6 years for representatives and within 12 years for senators. It also hosts a quarterly city hall for members to express their dissatisfaction and ask questions. I will serve within 6 years. I withhold my career as a firefighter to represent District 4. After representing people, I promise to end my career in firefighting.
Please tell us anything else about yourself that voters should know.
