Recommendations address improvements in quality, accessibility, fairness, and affordability.
A new position paper from the American College of Physicians (ACP) Health and Public Policy Committee explores the challenges of long-term care services and support (LTSS).
LTSS challenges include COVID-19 safety, labor shortages, quality and financing. This paper addresses these challenges by providing policy recommendations and calls on policy makers and stakeholders to improve quality, accessibility, fairness, and affordability.
“ACP believes that the LTSS sector needs to be strengthened to enable patients to maintain their quality of life while maintaining financial stability as they age,” the newspaper said.
The ACP recommendations are as follows:
- A multi-faceted public-private sector approach to reform long-term care service financing, specifically publicly funded, universal and catastrophic LTSS insurance programs and front-end private long-term care insurance at affordable prices Development of policies that enable you.
- To address labor shortages, policy makers and employers need to provide comprehensive training, salary increases, benefits, and opportunities for career progress and growth. There are also additional policies to assist unpaid caregivers through respite care, training, and refunds.
- Evidence-based intervention to ensure and improve the quality of long-term care services
- We will conduct a survey on the impact of ownership of the long-term care service sector, such as quality of care, staff-to-patient safety, costs, and staff ratios.
- Funding, support, and staff support for nursing homes and other long-term care service organizations for emergency preparedness planning
According to the treatise, as the population ages, government spending and demand for long-term care services increase. More than half of Americans are 65 years old and need some kind of long-term care service.
