Homemade apple crumble is the ultimate dessert following Sunday’s hearty roast dinner. A humble puddle is healthy, soothing, and absolutely delicious.
Whether you like hot custard, silky cream or vanilla ice cream, Instagram foodie @cakeontherun is healthy for traditional desserts by using oats instead of flour for crumble toppings. I added a twist. Rich in fiber and rich in important vitamins and minerals, easy replacement does not interfere with the delicious taste that many of us love over the weekend.
Known for her super-quick and easy recipes, @ cakeontherun’s all-in-one method isn’t that easy anymore and is perfect for anyone who needs to rush to make family friends. In addition, she likes to use cooked apples from jars and tins to make desserts even more convenient.

But her recipe can be made with any fruit, including berries, plums and rhubarb. The crumble topping contains margarine rather than butter, so it’s vegan-friendly (check the milk label) and is recommended to be served with plain yogurt or vanilla yogurt to stay healthy.
Apple crumble recipe using oats (4 servings)
material
- 200g oats, blend
- 75g sugar
- Margarine 75g
- 1tsp ground cinnamon
- Thick applesauce 1.5x jar
Method
- Preheat the oven to 200c / 400fh / gas mark 6.
- Use a blender or food processor to texture the blitz oats into flour.
- Put everything (except apples) in a bowl and mix with a spoon or fingertip to create a fine breadcrumb texture.
- Empty the fruit and place it in a safe dish in an oven of any size, then place the crumble mixture on top. Cook for about 25 minutes or until the top is golden.
- Warm with custard, cream, ice cream, or yogurt.
Top tip
To make the crumble even more crispy, take it halfway out of the oven and grate the toppings with a fork. Then pop in for another 15-20 minutes.
