Salt Lake City, Utah — (ReleaseWire) — February 3, 2022 — For many, losing weight is part of their New Year’s resolution. However, those who want to reduce the calories they drink may want to be careful with diet soda.
“We believe that diet soda is calorie-free, so people can drink it all day long,” said Elizabeth Hill, a registered dietitian at Intermountain Cedar City Hospital. “But some studies have shown that they cause even more problems with their weight.”
According to Hill, there are jury trials as to whether diet soda is more harmful than good for people seeking weight loss.
Artificial sweeteners help reduce overall calorie intake. According to one study, people helped lose weight and lose weight.
However, other studies have shown a relationship between artificial sweeteners and weight gain and appetite gain.
According to a study by the National Institutes of Health, overweight and obese adults who drink diet drinks consume significantly more calories from solid foods, especially from snacks, than those who drink sweet drinks.
Another study at the National Library of Medicine found that drinking diet soda changed the sweet center of the heart. This increased the craving for sweets, altered metabolism, and increased the risk of fat gain.
A longitudinal study of San Antonio’s aging found that diet soda intake was associated with a long-term increase in waist circumference over time.
In one study, researchers found that heavy consumers of both sweet soda and diet drinks were at increased risk of cardiovascular disease compared to participants who did not drink either type of soda.
“There’s one thing we certainly know. Replacing diets and all kinds of sugared sodas with water can speed up weight loss,” says Hill. Caffeinated soda can also cause dehydration, which helps maintain hydration, she added.
“The body’s hydration needs are primarily filled with water. In addition to losing weight, drinking more water contributes to a healthier body over time.”
