New Delhi: High cholesterol (or high levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL)) refers to the accumulation of excess bad cholesterol in the body as a result of eating too much saturated fat, refined sugar, and processed foods. Cholesterol or lipids are waxy substances found in the blood that support the formation of healthy cells.
On the one hand, experts recommend statins or anticoagulants for patients with hypercholesterolemia. They are now strongly supportive of following a diet to treat high LDL. And now, researchers have named specific snacks that can quickly and significantly lower high cholesterol levels. A groundbreaking study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that nutritional approaches to lowering LDL scores were as effective as dosing.
Does diet help lower high cholesterol levels?
In this study, led by the Mayo Clinic team, participants ate whole food-based snacks such as strawberry and banana smoothies and cholocate bars. These snacks are made from walnut-like ingredients known for their ability to lower cholesterol. For this reason, diet plans have been created to provide a range of essential nutrients such as antioxidants, omega 3 fatty acids, dietary fiber, and plant sterols. It is a compound that treats high cholesterol by preventing the body from absorbing fat molecules.
Some of the best sources of plant sterols are:
- nuts
- Serial
- seed
- Vegetable oil
- Leguminosae
Studies have established that this plant-based compound is one of the most effective treatments for high cholesterol. In this study, participants were asked to take these snacks in exchange for the food they had already eaten. According to experts, doing so lowered cholesterol levels. Within 30 days, participants reported an average 9% reduction in cholesterol levels. Some patients even reported a 30% reduction in lipids.
Nutrition and its ability to lower cholesterol
Nutrition is known to be one of the important correctable factors that contribute to the risk of heart disease, weight gain, or diabetes. Therefore, the first steps towards their management include making changes to their diet. Cholesterol can also be affected by dietary changes, such as healthy dietary fats and sources of abundant protein and fiber.
Studies have shown that the combination of nuts, soybeans, oats and plant sterols is suitable for this purpose. Oats prevent blood lipids from being absorbed by the intestines. Soybeans also inhibit cholesterol synthesis in the liver.
