Despite the fact that sex is a commonly performed activity in lying down, a study at the University of Quebec in Montreal has found that it is actually a fine calorie burner.
As a rare hybrid of gym mice and lazy sloths, I’m all trying to combine workouts with doing in a warm and comfortable bed.
Jessica Matthews, an exercise physiologist at the American Exercise Council, has confirmed that it is possible. “Sex can burn more than 3 to 4.5 calories per minute, depending on how active it is,” she told me.
Oh, it will be fine. Armed with merchandise like the Forerunner 220 (the latest fitness watch from Garmin’s genius) and my “workout partner”, also known as my husband, Greg, I decided to get burned.
Lowdown
First, the arm. During my verbal work, I cranked out three sets of 10 push-ups, paused between sets to rest the gun, and grabbed the board to move my abdominal muscles. My arms were shivering, and a thin film of sweat covered my holes and upper lip.
I know what you want to hear, and the answer is yes, it’s hard to be this sexy.
Squat thrust
Next, leg work. I put a yoga mat near the kitchen counter. Greg lay on it, and I crouched on his knees, put my feet on both sides of my hips, and turned my back. I pressed the timer on the clock and kept pressing the counter while doing the mini squat for 60 seconds. I have recovered. I turned to a few cookies and almost stopped, but I did my best with two more sets.
Tummy tamer
We moved to the bedroom for the abdominal muscle part of the training. Greg stood at the foot of the bed, with his feet straight up and a ball of medicine overhead. While Greg was plunging, I crunched my ankles, rode my bike, scissors, and my abdominal muscles weren’t the only ones screaming in response. (Wink wink.)

Sprint time! I synced my clock to my heart rate monitor and headed for O. It started at 59 beats per minute and reached 127 at the first orgasm. This should be done on a treadmill with a tilt of 7.7, 3%. Minutes to make my heart rate so high.
It fell in the 80’s and then rose again to 117 with O number 2. I was aiming for three “sprints”, but I’m only human, and so is Greg.
