While you may not be sticking to your fitness and exercise aggression over Christmas and New Year’s, you don’t have to go completely off the bandwagon. Health expert and personal his trainer Matt Hodges told Express.co.uk EXCLUSIVELY that there is one exercise he needs to do to keep himself from gaining too much weight. It’s just easier than you think.
Matt told Express.co.uk:
Drinking and eating becomes the primary social activity available, including countless Christmas parties and get-togethers with people you know.
Plus, with cold weather and hangovers from revelers, many of us often find the exercise regime we’ve honed over the course of the year out the window.
According to experts, the combination of eating more and exercising less won’t be positive for your waistline.

He explained: “This means that daily exercise is quite strenuous, and it is highly doubtful that people will reach the 10,000-step marker on any given day.
“Reduced energy consumption and increased energy consumption are biologically unidirectional.
“So, is your waistline auditioning for Santa or Mrs. Claus?”
But while the odds of Christmas are slightly stacked against us, there are ways to ring in the new year without packing on pounds.

Despite being a personal trainer, Matt doesn’t recommend going to the gym every day or even trying to fit a January-November fitness and diet plan.
But even while you’re enjoying all that Christmas has to offer, there are a few things you can do to help yourself.
“Again, preparation is key, but this time it’s exercise preparation. You don’t have to be Mo Farah for Christmas, you don’t have to do long runs, gym sessions or HIIT workouts at home.

“We need to get some mileage before the day starts.
“When I say ‘starting the day’, it’s the first thing you do when you wake up.
“Wake up, put on your boots, go for a walk… a long walk, a sweaty walk. Why? Klaus, because I said so!
“No, but seriously, it prepares your body for the day, burns off the massive calories you consumed the day before, and makes you feel great the next day.
Matt continues:
Walking can be a social family activity or you can do it with friends, so you don’t have to forget about festive socializing even when you’re exercising.
It’s also great because it’s accessible to most people, it’s not too draining, it’s completely free, and it doesn’t require any equipment.
Plus, depending on your fitness level and how hard you want to push yourself, your daily walk can be made easier or harder with a few small changes.
You can make walking harder by increasing your speed, adding inclines, changing terrain, and using walking poles to train your upper body.
