WASHINGTON DC – (December 1, 2022) – Every day, telemedicine provides convenient access to affordable, high-quality care and helps meet the nation’s growing demand for health services. Today, AHIP announced a new study conducted by his NORC at the University of Chicago. This shows how Americans think and feel about telemedicine. Respondents in the survey said using telemedicine is more convenient than making an in-person appointment, making it easier to find medical care when you need it. An overwhelming majority of respondents also said Congress must permanently create specific provisions to allow coverage for telemedicine services before the deductible can be paid in full.
Jeanette Thornton, AHIP’s Executive Vice President of Policy and Strategy, said: “Telemedicine is as effective as face-to-face care for many conditions, allowing patients to receive more services ‘on the spot’. As such, health insurers are working to enhance and improve both access and use for the millions of Americans who rely on telemedicine for their healthcare needs. “
NORC surveyed 1000 Americans on AmeriSpeak® Of these, 498 had employer-provided or individual market coverage (commercially insured) for their use of telemedicine in the past year. Of the commercial policyholders surveyed, 40% used telemedicine within the past year. Key findings include:
- The majority of respondents said they use telemedicine. more convenient than in-person appointments (69%).
- Nearly four in five (78%) say they have had success with telemedicine. Easier to find health care when they need it.
- The majority – 85% – said they existed Adequate number of healthcare providers Available via telemedicine for any health needs they may have.
- More than half (53%) have used telemedicine two to five times in the past year.
- Nearly 3 in 4 (73%) said parliament should be permanent Provision to allow coverage for telemedicine services before paying the full deductible.
As health professionals and policymakers grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, federal and state governments have allowed several temporary exemptions and flexibility to expand the use of telemedicine. These waivers helped ensure that patients received care even as health systems were strained and providers struggled to meet their needs. These new flexibilities have brought improvements for both providers and patients. Health insurers are encouraging policymakers at the federal and state levels to make telehealth design flexibility permanent so it can continue the convenience, access, and value it offers Americans. increase.

About AmeriSpeak®
Funded and operated by NORC at the University of Chicago AmeriSpeak® A probability-based panel designed to be representative of the US household population. Randomly selected US households are sampled using local probability and address-based sampling, with known non-zero probabilities selected from the NORC National Sample Frame. These sampled households are then contacted by US mail, telephone, and field interviewers (face-to-face). This panel provides a sample covering approximately 97% of the US household population. People excluded from the sample included those with PO Box-only addresses, addresses not listed in the USPS shipping sequence file, and new homes. Most AmeriSpeak households participate in web-based surveys, but households without Internet access can participate in telephone AmeriSpeak surveys. Households without traditional internet access but with web access via smartphone can participate in web-based AmeriSpeak surveys. AmeriSpeak panelists participate in NORC research or research conducted by NORC on behalf of government agencies, academic researchers, media and commercial organizations.
