World-class trainer and author Bevan James Eyles thought he was at his best in 2009. He’s an award-winning trainer, triathlete, and has worked in fitness “forever.”
However, when a friend confronted him about the fact that he was “failing in fitness” (people were exercising less and gaining weight), he was hit with a realization about himself.
“My thing was, if you’re healthy, I’m great. If you’re not, I don’t know how to help you.”
He started a running group in Christchurch in 2010 after realizing that people didn’t incorporate exercise into their lives and didn’t understand how to help them.

However, at first, “everyone failed”.
“I was a little hurt. What I learned in that moment was that I don’t understand people who don’t exercise.”
“I had to learn a whole new set of rules.”
That’s exactly what he did, and his running group now has a nearly 90% success rate, and he’s partnered with Stuff to get New Zealand off the couch and into Round the Bays in March 2023. We launched a dedicated program designed to fit.
There’s a simple reason for it all, says Eyles. Adding running or walking into your life has life-changing benefits. In fact, he claims, “You will function better as a person.”
“And not just for yourself, but actually for your world.”
We live in a world where it’s all too easy not to move, but Eyles says that in addition to the obvious benefits of being fitter, more energetic, and better heart health, “it doesn’t sell very well. “The life-changing benefits are many,” she says. .
It boosts your self-esteem, makes it a healthy and fun way to socialize, and your ability to overcome adversity (especially if you start out as someone who does little or no exercise) can continue across other aspects of your daily life. .
“[People tell me] Bevan, I am a better mother, a better job, a better person. ”
Self-proclaimed “former drop kick” thing 2014: “I was the most drunk of all time. I was really embarrassed. I was lazy and unreliable,” Eyles says exercise now comes naturally. You start the wrong way.
But while it’s easy to get motivated, it’s just as easy to fail.
“What I often see when people want to start exercising is thinking about the results they want, and that is often too ambitious. I am saying.”
“People have motivating moments, but they create experiences that are almost certain to fail.
Instead, the trick is to focus on creating a habit and checking the behaviors associated with it, whether it’s packing your gear the night before or letting your partner or co-worker know you’re leaving early for exercise. .
“If you’re someone who’s doing nothing right now, the most important thing is how you incorporate movement into your life.
And it is important not to try too hard and not too fast.
Instead, the first steps should be easy and fun. According to Eyles, that’s what keeps people coming back. If a person tries too hard, they won’t be able to enjoy the experience, they are more likely to get hurt, and much less likely to come back after a few days.
“If we can create an experience….on a level that feels really easy…there’s a better chance you’ll show up next time.”
Eyles’ Round the Bays program is designed to motivate and guide people of various fitness levels, whether they want to walk an event, run or walk, and eventually run the entire course. .
Through eight weeks of coaching, motivational techniques and expert programming, Ailes believes that events like Round the Bays, which can be held virtually anywhere in New Zealand, are the perfect way to celebrate habits that were formed weeks ago. says there is.
“That’s the great thing about an event like this. It’s accessible to so many people. A lot of people who think they can’t can, with effort, be able to walk.”
