Madison, Wisconsin (WMTV) – Local high school students are learning hands-on kitchen skills thanks to a partnership between Horizon High School and Southern Wisconsin’s Second Harvest Food Bank.
The “Community Cook” program brings a new chef to Horizon High School twice a month.
“Community cooks come in and come in and show you different dishes and different options out there, and you can expose them to things you wouldn’t normally touch,” says Brown, a full-time therapist at Horizon High School Madeline. Said.
Brown said the experience made the students more adaptable and that preparing meals was both educational and fun.
“They are happy to try everything and it was a really cool experience to see them trying things they wouldn’t normally try, but they are open minded and having fun in the process. Sitting down and eating together is basically family and creates a lot of cohesion and togetherness.”
Community cook Daijah Birchette said she is looking forward to cooking with her students for weeks to come.
“We’ve planned and tested our recipes to make sure they’re really good for everyone who eats them today, even though we’ve made the same thing over and over,” Burshett said.
Birchette specializes in plant-based foods and wants to draw people’s attention to their culinary benefits.
“I want to introduce people to plant-based foods, but I don’t want them to feel like ‘it might be shoddy’ or ‘it might be bland’ or that they just don’t know what to expect. There is none.”
Brown said that even after cooking the meals, the students still wanted to eat more.
“They love it.
