While many people can reach or maintain a healthy weight with a nutritious diet and regular exercise, some people just don’t get along with these common lifestyle choices. We often find that simply reducing caloric intake and increasing physical activity is not enough and leads to temporary weight loss at best.
Most people with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher, classified as class 3 obese or “severely” obese by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suffer from poor overall health for years. I’m in. Not only do they often experience struggles related to self-image and energy levels, they are also at risk for serious health problems such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.
What many people don’t realize is that obesity is a metabolic disease. Diet and exercise often fail unless the underlying metabolic disorders of severe obesity are addressed. success.
Sharp at the forefront of innovative treatments
Until recently, weight loss surgical options included wrap bands, sleeve gastrectomy, and gastric bypass. However, these procedures do not always address the needs of people who have lost weight after previous bariatric surgery. Also, people with a BMI over 50 or over 200 pounds over their ideal weight may also find these options ineffective.
Experts at Sharp Coronado Hospital now have innovative medical treatments available for this population. SADI, or single anastomotic duodenal ileal bypass. SADI is intended for people with high BMI or who have regained weight after sleeve gastrectomy. The Sharp Coronado offers a first-of-its-kind procedure for Sharp. “SADI works by combining the benefits of sleeve gastrectomy with the benefits of gastric bypass,” said Sunil Boirul, Ph.D., FRCS, FACS, medical director of bariatric surgery at Sharp Coronado Hospital. . “Patient can realistically expect to lose 40% of her body weight and get all the benefits of a tried and tested, safe and minimally invasive surgery.”
Board-certified bariatric surgeons Dr. Bhoyrul and Dr. Pascal Bortz have collectively performed over 5,000 bariatric surgeries. They work with a dedicated bariatrics team (including nurse practitioners, nutritionists and clinical psychologists) to provide comprehensive weight management and support before, during and after surgery.
“We are excited to bring SADI surgery and other treatment options to the Coronado community and beyond,” said Dr. Bhoyrul. “Having his SADI in our range of surgical options makes us truly world leaders, allowing us to tailor our surgical approach to the needs of each individual patient. It is a departure from “one-size-fits-all” practices. ”
How the SADI procedure works
SADI surgery is performed under general anesthesia. First, make several small incisions in the abdomen. Using laparoscopic or robotic techniques, the size of the patient’s stomach is reduced by about 80%, leaving a small sleeve-shaped pouch that can hold less food.
The lower part of the stomach is then disconnected from the upper part of the small intestine and reconnected with the lower part of the small intestine. This anatomical change causes significant hormonal changes in the body that greatly improve the patient’s metabolism and decrease fat and calorie absorption. After surgery, most patients are discharged from the hospital within her 1-2 days and return to normal activities within 14-28 days after surgery.
SADI makes your stomach smaller, which is a big advantage over dieting. It affects the hunger hormone (ghrelin) and reduces appetite. It improves the hormone (GLP-1) that causes diabetes and heart failure. Alters the intestinal bacteria that live in the digestive tract (microbiome). Alters bile acid pools and helps regulate metabolism. This procedure truly maximizes all known, scientifically proven weight loss mechanisms, says Dr. Boirul.
Which Weight Loss Surgery Is Best?
SADI is not for everyone, but it is an important option for surgical weight loss, allowing physicians to choose the best option for their individual needs. Doctors consider many factors before recommending a particular procedure, including the weight you are trying to lose and any existing medical conditions.
“Every patient is different,” says Dr. Bhoyrul. “We ask our patients to remain open-minded about their options and let the assessment determine the recommended surgical options for you and your body type.”
Everyone responds differently to surgical weight loss treatments. But Dr. Bhoyrul says patients can expect dramatic improvements in their health over time.
“We are thrilled that Sharp HealthCare can offer this advanced treatment option,” he says. “We are proud to bring comprehensive, safe and affordable bariatric surgery to the San Diego community.”
