TEWKSBURY — Joe Henry is passionate about nutrition for man’s best friend. A Wilmington resident and Tewkesbury business owner, he and his wife Erin own Timberdoodles at 2144 Maine Street. Henry is an accomplished butcher and makes research into high-quality nutrition for dogs his full-time job. We work hard to provide quality food.
Henry, a dog owner himself, began researching the best types of nutrition for his beloved Duncan, a rescued American Staffordshire Terrier.
“The pet food industry is looking at cheap kibble for dogs,” Henry says. “How can a 60-pound food bag that lasts for months be healthy for your pet? You wouldn’t eat it yourself.
Henry was so disappointed with what he found regarding commercial pet foods that it prompted him to turn his knowledge of meat and health into a mission to provide pet owners with quality ingredients. The focus was on real meat and vegetables that dogs consume raw. Raw pet food is considered desirable by an increasing number of owners and is gaining momentum around the world.
Education is key, Henry said, and when pet owners understand the relationship between quality ingredients and their pets’ health, they are enlightened.
Henry’s business sells directly to customers through pet stores, online and the Tewkesbury Shop. He prides himself on the complete and balanced recipes he uses. Henry hired a pet nutrition consultant to work with him to assess the optimal balance of ingredients for humans.
Henry sells jerky. Jerky is a pre-sliced, additive-free dried meat product with no preservatives.
“It’s pure turkey, chicken and beef,” Henry said.
His store is cozy and has a handsome leather sofa with a smartly painted background called the “Pooch Sofa” that many pet owners visit and use for their pet photos. The shop also hosts professional photography events for owners.
Henry said he’s been keeping his prices down and taking on more work himself while the cost of materials has risen. We look forward to visiting the Farmers Market and expanding further.
Opening hours are posted on Instagram or on the shop’s website. www.timberdoodles.comHenry is excited to be a part of the Route 38 small business community, where residents stop by to buy food for their pets or grab a bag of jerky as a gift for a dog-owning friend. We welcome you to join us.
