Risk manager Ben Evans won the 2022 Risk All Star Award for his safety priorities during the UPenn Pavilion project.
The University of Pennsylvania has maintained its position to provide top-notch medical services for over 200 years, and the development of pavilion projects is no exception.
Designed to expand Penmedicine’s care offerings, the Pavilion is the largest construction project the university has ever undertaken. Coupled with that range, the pavilion will be built in the heart of Philadelphia, with hospitals and other facilities on site.
In addition to being at risk, the project employed hundreds of construction workers and it was imperative to ensure their safety from start to finish. It was a risky business, but when the pavilion opened in October 2021, Ben Evans, Vice President of Risk Management and Insurance at UPenn, showed that he was the right person for the job. ..
The breadth and strength of the project meant that Evans and his team had to consistently check the checkboxes throughout the pavilion’s five-year construction period. To provide united leadership, UPenn has decided to use an integrated project delivery (IPD) approach. This allowed us to insure the entire project with one policy.
“”[This project] It was the first time Penn had gone that route, “Evans said. “There was one policy, one set of liability limits available to all insureds … From the beginning, we knew there was no pointing and we would all be rowing in the same direction.”
The Pavilion project has also introduced something new to Evans, personally and professionally. It was part of the Owner Management Insurance Program (OCIP), which, according to Evans Riskall, “Pen Medicine purchased liability and workers’ accident compensation insurance for all registered contractors.” Star application.
Of course, both IPD and OCIP could not thrive without protecting the safety of everyone involved in the project, especially those who work daily on the site itself. Evans personally took this initiative.
In fact, Evans devised an initiative called “March to Zero.” This was the project’s goal to eliminate accidents and accidents during construction. Safety was an element that Evans prioritized and respected.
“During this project, I never had a moment when I wasn’t in touch with the construction management leadership team, Foremen, etc.,” Evans said. In fact, Evans visited the site itself every week to make sure that all safety protocols were followed and improved as needed.
“We’ve been OCIP for 30 years and never walked by an owner. [through the site] Tom Morin, Senior Vice President of Graham Company, which partnered with Penmedison to complete the pavilion, said:
“There was no further message to the contractor about how important safety is.” &
