My name is Jessica Hicks (@_jessicablayne_), I am 39 years old and live in Tennessee. Having suffered from weight and mental health for years, I took a break from work and focused on myself. I tracked food with the Weight Watchers app and started a light workout in my neighborhood. These changes helped me lose £ 123.
My weight has been up and down since college, but when I switched between antidepressants and anxiety medications, I became the heaviest in my mid-30s. Not worrying about mental health had a great effect on the deterioration of physical health. High blood pressure, swelling of the legs and hands, and prolonged depression and anxiety.
In 2019 I was £ 37 and £ 268. After taking a particular medicine for more than two years, I found that it wasn’t the right medicine for me. But I felt like a prisoner to it. The withdrawal symptoms were terrible. There was no way for me to work (as a corporate talent and payroll manager) and stop taking medicine. Not only did I gain weight, but I also had zero energy. It was a vicious circle. My mind was anxious and wanted to get things done, but my body was lethargic and depressed and unwilling to even do the most common work.
My biggest motivation for getting healthy was my family.
I have a big family. I am a wife, a mother, and even a grandmother. I had to do something to get back to the best version for my family.
In May 2019, my husband supported me by taking a break from my career. By the end of September 2019, I was ready to work on my physical health.

It was simple and easy to understand, and I was able to balance while eating my favorite food. I knew it would be something I could sustain in the long run. We are currently maintaining weight loss by tracking calories with the MyFitnessPal app.

At first, I tried to be as active as possible. Lots of cleaning and tidying up my house. Don’t underestimate the power to get away from the sofa! Then I started by walking around the neighborhood and biking.

In 2022, I bought a Peloton bike and am currently cycling and strength training 5 days a week. I love it, and it helps my anxiety!
With these three changes, my weight loss was successful.
- I changed my mind. I knew that feeling too spoiled for a meal or a day did not mean that all of my progress was gone. I didn’t throw the towel. I just went back and picked it up and continued. Consistency beyond perfection!
- I abandoned the timeline. I didn’t put the timeline on my weight loss journey. This will be a lifelong effort.
- I stuck to what worked for me. I eat my favorite food. I do the training I enjoy. I made sure I worked for myself, not everyone else.

I want other women to know that they deserve happiness and can do anything. It is not selfish to put yourself first. It’s the best gift you can give yourself, your family, friends, work and more.

Losing weight has brought my life back. I am no longer a bystander. I can participate in fun activities with my family and create memories that weren’t there before over £ 120. This is an irreplaceable and precious memory.
