Springfield, Missouri (KY3)-KY3 reported that a national shortage of infant formula affected families throughout Ozark. Viewers since the story have posted homemade recipes for the ceremony.
WIC nutritionist and breastfeeding consultant Tawana Frazier advises families not to prescribe.
Frazier says that not only is the kitchen at home not considered clean enough, but these recipes don’t contain enough of the nutrients your baby needs.
“The recipes we buy in stores are the most regulated foods in the world,” says Frazier. “It is highly measured to the gram of ingredients needed by babies. Kitchen cleaning and safety are very strict.”
Frazier says there is a high risk of contamination when making prescriptions.
Frazier states that changing just one ingredient can pose a significant health risk to an infant.
“Excessive dilution of something can cause water intoxication in babies,” says Frazier. “They will really be deficient in calcium. Calcium is the main thing that goes down. Some of the ingredients recommended to add may be at risk of food poisoning, such as caro syrup. It can carry botulist-poisoned spores, which can have a very fatal effect on babies. “
Taylor Gold is having a hard time finding a prescription for a 7-month-old baby girl.
Since her baby was born prematurely, Gold says it’s important to have the right nutrients. That’s why Gold thinks she never makes her own formula.
“There are many bad things to do,” says Gold. “It can be an infection, a seizure. It can cause death in many of it. I’ve seen many moms say you can do it, but it’s It’s not good for them because there are many things that go wrong with doing. “
Leah Vandiver made a prescription for the children, saying he received the recipe from a pediatrician. She feels it’s cheap and she says Vandiver knows what’s happening to her baby.
“For the ingredients, we buy all-natural organic non-GMO ingredients for that, so it is organic brown sugar syrup that provides iron and natural sugar instead of the processed syrup sugar used in most formulas.” Says Vandiver.
If you’re having trouble finding a formula, Frazier recommends switching to another formula on the shelf.
“Please contact your doctor’s office,” says Frazier. “We may have obtained sample-sized cans from our representatives because they are not affected by the supply.”
According to Frazier, if your baby is old enough to safely start eating softly cooked table foods, you can add a little more solid food.
“Then they are incorporating fewer formulas,” says Frazier.
There is an online post for a woman who sells breast milk. Frazier has also expressed concern about it, saying it is difficult to regulate someone’s taking proper hygiene measures.
“I don’t recommend this at all,” says Frazier. “Everything in the blood supply is in breast milk, so if the mother has a virus, bacteria, or even a disease, it can be passed on from the mother to the baby.”
Frazier says some people may not be honest with their health history.
“You really don’t know what’s in that milk,” says Frazier. “We also don’t know the hygiene used to collect milk and how clean the pump was if it was properly stored. It really increases the risk of bacteria and causes sick babies. “
Springfield-Greene County Health Department warns against homemade prescriptions.
Parents and other caregivers should not make or feed homemade infant formulas. Without proper regulation, homemade infant formula may lack the proper ingredients essential for infant growth and can cause life-threatening food poisoning when consumed. If your baby consumes homemade infant formula, it is advisable to contact your healthcare provider for immediate care.
In addition, diluted formulations (mixed with more water to prolong life) are not recommended as they can cause water intoxication in babies.
Springfield-Greene County WIC has made several alternatives available. For special prescriptions, parents and caregivers can consult their healthcare provider or try a ready-to-eat version of an existing prescription. As for WIC, they will have to come to the office to change their interests.
