Three faculty members: Internal Medicine, Cary Gross, and MD. Elizabeth Jonas, MD; And Patrick G. O’Connor, MD, MPH, MACP were elected to the American Medical Association (AAP) at the organization’s annual meeting in April 2022.
Gross is a professor of medicine (general medicine) and epidemiology (chronic disease). In 2010, he founded the Cancer Outcomes, Public Policy, and Effectiveness Research (COPPER) Center at Yale University. The goal of this center is to improve cancer treatment and reduce the burden of cancer on individual patients and society as a whole. Gross is also the director of COPPER. In addition, he is the director of the National Clinician Scholarship Program (NCSP) at Yale University. NCSP prepares future clinician leaders to improve US health and healthcare. Gross’s research focuses on assessing new approaches to cancer screening and treatment, addressing the effectiveness of comparisons, quality, and health equity, clinical care and health policy.
Jonas is a professor of medicine (endocrinology) and neuroscience. Jonas’ latest research focuses on the role of neurometabolism and mitochondrial ion channels in cell death and synaptic plasticity in acute and chronic neurodegenerative diseases. She studies intracellular ion channels on mitochondrial membranes, intracellular components important for cell survival, death, and energy metabolism. She is currently investigating new hypotheses about how changes in mitochondrial ion channels occur between ischemic brain and developmental disorders. In addition, Jonas teaches undergraduate, medical, and graduate students at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, through a fellowship program at Yale University.
O’Connor is a general internal medicine professor of Dan Adams and Amanda Adams and a chief of general internal medicine. O’Connor, a world-renowned general physician, is an expert in addiction medicine, and his research focuses on the interface between the two disciplines. His research on substance use disorders has led to more than 200 publications in major generalist journals, including: New England Journal of Medicine And that Journal of American Medical Association.. O’Connor was nominated as a Master by the American Medical Association in May 2021. He is currently the Accountant of the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) and chair of the National Program Committee for the National Clinician Scholarship Program.
According to AAP, election to the organization honors physicians with “excellent qualifications in basic or translational biomedical research.”
