French writer and coach Catherine Petz writes the best-selling gymnastics books that are gaining popularity around the world.
As a new edition of her latest book (written in French) La Gymnastique Faciale, With bonus sections dedicated to the various shapes of the face, we talked to her about the many benefits of these exercises and learned more about how, when and why to do them on a daily basis. – AFP Relaxnews
You have a degree in literature and are writing fiction. How did you get interested in facial gymnastics?
When I was 48, I noticed that facial features began to slide down while bending in the mirror. I was interested in the muscles underneath the skin in this area. With the help of my husband, a doctor, I started my research, and in particular, I noticed the presence of these skin muscles and how effective they are (in this regard). As a lover of writing, it didn’t take long for me to come up with the idea of sharing my experience with other women through books.
How are facial exercises beneficial to the skin?
Enthusiastic exercise of the 50 muscles of the face while repeating a cycle of tension and relaxation has an undeniable effect on the firmness of the skin. Does the emergence of methods such as facial gymnastics indicate that our modern lifestyle and behavior contribute to skin sagging?
On the contrary, I don’t think so. Our mothers and grandmothers have always experienced such deterioration of their characteristics after menopause. And it cannot be denied that 70 years old today is completely different from people of that age in the past … I am detrimental to our beauty and health, for example the sun. Overdose of alcoholic beverages and alcoholic beverages is well established. We all know what we are dealing with and dermatology is steadily advancing. I think we’re more involved, and maybe we’re more careful not to get too far from nature … that’s mainly the change.
The approach you have developed includes an exercise program tailored to each face shape. Can you explain how it works?
After publishing the books so far, I realized from my experience in the field that it is not always desirable for each person to train the same muscles because each face shape has its own personality. Square faces should not overuse the jaw muscles, but long faces should focus on this area. Such exercises can not only improve tissue sagging, but also correct certain defects associated with this sagging.
Do you think facial exercises are as effective as Botox sessions?
I wouldn’t say that for the simple reason that Botox paralyzes muscles more than temporarily. The work done on our muscle fibers through facial gymnastics exercises is not aimed at paralyzing the muscles, but at stimulating them to shorten the fibers and lift features. I am convinced that the muscles that support this part of the skin are weak and wrinkle. Of course, if you paralyze with a Botox injection, the unsightly lines should disappear, but then your face will become mummified and your facial expression will be lost. This is not the effect I am looking for by advocating facial exercise exercises.
Which part of the face can you work on?
All of them! If you need to, there are no zones that can’t benefit from facial exercises. Face contours, cheeks, foreheads, temples, and even eye areas … every part of the face has exercise.
If you are over 40, is it too late to start facial exercises?
Absolutely not! It’s the ideal age to start. As soon as the first signs of aging appear … and these signs begin around the age of menopause, most often between the ages of 45 and 50. With the loss of estrogen, the tissue loosens at all levels and is first noticed on the face.
There are dozens of exercises in your book. Do you need to do all of them regularly to get your hands back in time for your face?
Looking back on time isn’t as much of a problem as it is to improve your skin every day. Diligence is rewarded and takes on its effectiveness. The idea is not to do all the exercises. Therefore, we have established routines in the book for each toning problem that arises with age and problems.

Is there anything you absolutely need?
Actually, there are exactly two. The first one deals with the shape and contour of the face. It is to stop the slack by working on the digastric muscle. The second is to turn your face to the center, work on your cheekbones, and lift your upper lip.
Do you think these manual methods could replace the myriad of creams we use every day in the long run?
Self-massage and jacket pinch are two important pillars for maintaining the beauty of facial skin. In addition to forcing the position of facial muscles to be tracked, self-massage drains lymphatic vessels along that path, smoothing and relieving involuntary tensions such as wrinkles between the eyes. It will help. Pinch the jacket to deeply stimulate the muscle fibers and give them the driving force needed to produce hyaluronic acid. However, creams are not replaced, primarily because they force us to interact with the skin on a daily basis. They are an integral part of our cosmetology care. Self-massage should be used to slide the fingers over the skin without wrinkling, while at the same time penetrating the epidermis with self-massage gestures.
