There’s nothing more frustrating than losing weight just to put it back on with interest. Unfortunately, fad diets and other weight loss plans are almost always doomed to failure. Ironically, the problem is that their extreme or unbalanced approach often exacerbates the underlying conditions that cause obesity.
Health Utah’s Dr. Whit Roberts explains why two of the most popular diets of the decade, the keto and paleo diets, ended up putting on more weight.
Pareo
1. Insulin resistance
Gist:
- Studies show that meat raises insulin levels as much as carbohydrates.
- Insulin resistance is associated with weight gain, as shown in additional studies.
detail:
The Paleo diet suggests eating foods that were thought to have been eaten by humans during the Paleolithic period, that is, foods obtained by hunting and gathering. Includes meat, fish, eggs, nuts and seeds.
Many proponents of this diet debate the fact that carbohydrates raise insulin levels and that high insulin leads to weight gain. In fact, all types of meat cause as much insulin secretion as pure sugar. This leads to insulin resistance.
Insulin resistance is the inability of insulin receptors on cells to respond to insulin.
“This is a big problem because these receptors are the only mechanism that opens the gate for sugar to enter the cell. As a result, sugar stays in the bloodstream and causes all sorts of damage,” says Dr. Roberts. “What’s the body’s solution to this problem? It stores excess sugar in a safe place: fat cells. Fat cells get fatter and you see unexplained weight gain.”
Dr. Roberts says he’s not advocating not eating meat. His point is that you can’t cut out entire food categories. They all have their place in people’s diets.
2. Dyslipidemia
Gist:
- Dyslipidemia is when good cholesterol is low and bad cholesterol and/or triglycerides are high.
- Studies have shown that the paleo diet causes dyslipidemia.
- Scientific studies have linked dyslipidemia with insulin resistance.
- Additional research shows that insulin resistance can lead to obesity.
detail:
Curiously, weight loss in any way, except when losing weight on the Paleo diet, at least temporarily lowers bad cholesterol and triglycerides. We even saw a 20% increase in .
“This is a problem because this lipid imbalance is always associated with insulin resistance, which of course leads to weight gain,” says Dr. Roberts.
“The takeaway message is that there is no one size fits all diet. Clearly, the Paleo diet has helped many people lose weight,” says Dr. Roberts. “Special tests at Health Utah help identify what metabolic issues a person has and how best to support their weight loss efforts.”
Keto
3. Dysbiosis
Gist:
- The keto diet has been shown to reduce the abundance and diversity of gut bacteria.
- The resulting condition is called dysbiosis, a condition in which, according to medical research, there are more bad bacteria than good bacteria.
- Studies show that gut microbiota can lead to obesity.
detail:
There are five basic categories of gut-specific bacteria. Dysbiosis is a state where these balances are disturbed. A lack of fiber on the keto diet basically starves the good bacteria and fills the void with the bad bacteria. This imbalance leads to many other chemical imbalances, altered energy metabolism, inflammation, and obesity.
Dr. Roberts explains: Because you have bad bacteria in your gut. “
The reality is that these diets have probably helped thousands of people lose weight and keep it off. But they probably caused rebound weight gain in thousands of others. The problem is that there is no single diet that works for everyone. For example, people who are susceptible to insulin resistance may gain weight back rapidly after losing weight on the keto diet.
“The solution is to test,” says Dr. Roberts. Health Utah uses four new scanning technologies to identify your body’s trends and metabolic state, pinpoint where you are, and chart your weight loss progress.
These tests can also help identify other factors such as toxins, insomnia, infections, allergies, hormonal imbalances, candida, and liver and gallbladder dysfunction.
